Brief history of reclining chairs (why they’re traditionally so large!)
The history of reclining chairs dates back right the 18th century, and although these early versions were functionally the same as modern-day recliners, they tended to lack that comfortable feeling of relaxation that most of us associate with reclining chairs.
It wasn’t until the late 1920s that two American cousins, Shoemaker and Knabush gained a patent on a wooden recliner. This patent eventually led to the formation of the famous American company La-Z-Boy. Since then many people have aspired to owning a La-Z-Boy recliner, or one of the other many makes around today. Generations have grown up relaxing in these huge, overstuffed and comfortable recliner chairs and can remember very clearly how they dominated the living room.
A lot of these designs are still enormous, as for a long time they were regarded as being a man’s chair. Recliners were traditionally somewhere the man of the house was able to relax after a hard day’s work. This trend carried on for decades, and it wasn’t until the 1980s that manufacturers began to listen to their female consumers demands. Women wanted chairs that were not only smaller, but which had a more streamlined and sleeker appearance. But it wasn’t until the 1990s that manufacturers finally began producing smaller recliner chairs.

At the beginning of the 90s manufacturers finally began making recliner chairs in a smaller scale. In addition the chairs were designed to appeal to women’s tastes, and even carried more appealing names. In 1994 La-Z-Boy began manufacturing chairs designed for people who were 5’4″ tall or less, acknowledging this huge market.
Nowadays, thankfully things have changed and manufacturers have recognised the need for smaller recliner chairs suitable for people with smaller frames. These chairs are less overwhelming and are often more modern in design. They don’t have that overstuffed look and huge seats, but are far more streamlined and suitable for a contemporary home.
Small recliners can be more suitable for today’s modern homes
Today’s trend is also towards having more compact homes that are easier to heat, and small recliners, or small wall hugger recliners are perfect for apartments. Another advantage of choosing a compact reclining chair is that it will easily fit into a bedroom. Many new parents find it much easier to fit a smaller reclining chair into a bedroom, maximising comfort levels for all those sleepless nights.
Some of the European small reclining chairs are especially stylish. They tend to be far more contemporary in style than traditional American recliners, and are frequently upholstered in leather.
Small recliners aren’t just for women
Of course you don’t have to be female to take full advantage of smaller reclining chairs. They can be suitable for anyone who is slighter in build, and make a perfect place for children or teenagers to relax. If you think this sounds extravagant then just consider the advantages in buying separate seating for your kids. You’ll find it saves all those tedious arguments over where everyone is going to sit. The only thing is that you’ll need to be prepared to let it go with them once they leave home.
If you’re fed up with having a cluttered looking living room, then choosing smaller seating can be the ideal option. It’s definitely not a compromise on quality or comfort, as they are built to the same high standards and use exactly the same high quality materials as the larger chairs. You’ll find there are just as many choices of materials and styles as there are in the larger sizes.
One thing to take into consideration is that these smaller chairs don’t come with a smaller price tag. Although you might find them slightly cheaper than their full size cousins the difference is often minimal. This is because they still require just as much work to manufacture, and the design can take a lot more thought than larger chairs. Designers have had to make the most of having less space while maximizing comfort levels.
